the survival of the State of Israel is equivalent to the survival of the Jewish people in the minds of many Jews.

I'm sure it is. I can't imagine being English without there being an England, even if I never lived there. To the people of a nation which has survived the loss of it's homeland, and retained their identity through such a long period of time, I'm sure it's even more true.
