I don't have enough United miles to actually do anything with them as far as travel goes, so I'm going to use them for some magazine subscriptions. I know I definitely want Out, The Advocate, and Wired but I'm not sure whether some of the others are any good. Thoughts?

I really wish the New Yorker was on the list -- I really like it. But alas, no joy. Thanks for the information on New York Magazine, I was actually considering it.

I checked and it is Bon Appetit that my love-to-cook friends get, not Gourmet as I thought... so I highly recommend Bon Appetit!

Ah, but here's the question: would it be a good magazine for someone who can barely make scrambled eggs but would love to learn more?

I think so... there are recipes that call for esoteric equipment and ingredients, but also simpler ones. And browsing the magazines at their house definitely inspired me to be more ambitious about cooking, though I still find it intimidating.

A book I would really recommend for taking-the-first-steps-beyond-scrambled-eggs is Mark Bittman's How To Cook Everything. It's a great step-by-step reference that includes everything from "what does this vegetable look like and how do I know if it's gone bad?" to "make Thanksgiving dinner."

I'll add it to my Amazon wishlist, thank you!
