I finally got up the nerve to ask the housemates to take down the xmas tree and they said yes! My house is once again Jew-friendly!

Why did they have a Christmas tree up in almost-May?

I don't know! I'd tried to be understanding. I didn't complain in December or January or February or March ... April is when I gave up on understanding and moved to "DUDE WTF?"

Christmas tree. End of April? You are very patient :)

It was artificial, so not like it was dropping needles the whole time.

Dude. A Christmas tree still up this time of year is annoying/embarrassing no matter *what* one's religion might be. Talk about lazy roommates! I hope they do dishes, at least . . . :/

They do dishes. Sometimes. I'm more picky about xmas trees than dishes. :)

Yay!

And I join the confused masses in the "They still had it up after Easter?" confusion.

I really should have taken a picture of it! Was strange.

Did they at least decorate it for Easter? Drap it with eggs and bunnies?

Because then - well, it would be. Very silly looking, but appropriate.

Nope, it was still decorated for xmas.

They had a christmas tree up in April? Weird.
I wish it was acceptable to not celebrate Christmas because of atheism, but no, I just get called a grouch.

Are you kidding? It's not acceptable not to celebrate because of Judaism! I get called a grinch and told I have issues with Christianity.

Really? Wow. I can't say I know a lot of Jewish people, but many people round here are Muslim or Hindu and... yeah, no one seems bothered that they don't celebrate it. It's not their religion, so why should they? (Although the people who own the local shop take any excuse to shut early.)

Different perspective and, well, different continent, though. I'm sorry you go through that kind of narrow-minded shit.

Yeah. I get harassed at work for not wanting to go to the xmas party. It sucks.

While customs vary in the Christian and pagan households I've been in, the general sense is that the Christmas/Yule tree is typically considered

-seasonal through New Years.
-potentially acceptable whether through laziness or some other made up winter observance until about the 2nd weekend in January
-*cough* the holiday is over *cough* after January 15
-Hello! Groundhogs Day! Don't see any shadow fearing rodents in that tree.
-It's Valentine's Day, get rid of the damn tree already.

- Post-Easter? WTF!

And that's all assuming that the entire household was behind the idea of celebrating one or both of those holidays in the first place.

How was that house hunting going?

Ugh. I am struggling between:

1) A mortgage payment that's 28% of my income and puts me in a nice townhouse.
2) A more conservative mortgage payment which puts me in a small condo.

I don't know.
