Five Things about Utopia

1) This exchange broke me:

"It's not easy. Even just ... just looking at you, Jack. 'Cause you're wrong."
"Thanks."

Guh. Such good angst.

2) Everyone has to write the list 'o Jack-deaths. Now.

3) On the podcast the costume supervisor explained that she went out and got John 15 different white t-shirts to choose from, since he'd never been happy with the ones she gave him on Torchwood. I find this utterly adorable. *shakes head in horror at fangirl self*

4) A few people have said that Jack's flirting seemed forced, and I'd have to agree. But I don't think it's because he's secretly pining for Ianto. As much as I love Ianto, Jack's just found the Doctor and I don't think he's thinking of anything or anyone else. I think it's Jack trying to be the same man that the Doctor knew, and finding that it doesn't quite work any more.

5) In the Confidential, RTD talks about why Jack and the Doctor had to talk during a crisis, with radiation and danger and a door between them. He said it was written very intentionally, because That's What Men Do, that's when they would talk about things when they're in the middle of all that. Now, I think there's some truth in that but I also think that Russell might also have written it that way so that if John overacted it, it would be disguised by Jack's physical exertion.*

* Disclaimer: I love John, I do. (See #3 if you want proof.) But his acting skills just aren't up to handling subtle and nuanced and layered. Not consistently, anyway.

Fair warning, I have no idea if this will be coherent or not.

As much as I love Ianto, Jack's just found the Doctor and I don't think he's thinking of anything or anyone else.

Even as a Jack/Ianto fangirl, I agree with that. I haven't seen the episode yet, but that is the exact kind of reaction I would expect. If Jack ever does get serious about Ianto, I would STILL expect that kind of reaction. But as is, it doesn't seem like they've been together very long, and Jack's been waiting for the Doctor for a while.

It's the glorious ex situation. Trying to overcome them doesn't do anyone any good.

Yeah, exactly. And I think it might drive Ianto nuts, but it's 100% understandable and 100% Jack.

By the way, I can't stop giggling over your icon. Every single time I see it.

They do both have that glorious ex, though, so Ianto would be a bit of a hypocrite to get too upset by it. XD

Yeah, but Ianto's is dead. jack's can swoop in at any moment and ask if Jack wouldn't like to go adventuring with him.

When is the last time death permanently stopped anyone in Torchwood?

When the actor wasn't available?

Here's my theory of why RTD put them in the middle of crisis during the Big Talk....

It allowed for a major phallic moment to happen as Jack was all grunting and sweating and fiddling with the magic penii of doom while the Doctor just watched. If ever there was a sublimated (barely) sex scene, that was it.

Anyway--that's my story (and defense of Barrowman) and I'm stickin' to it *g*.

*giggles helplessly* The Doctor's such a selfish lover, making Jack do all the work.

Now I need a "Magic Penii of Doom" icon. And I feel like a bad Barrowman fangirl. *pouts*

Um. Little busy doing exams at the moment. Can you wait 'till the weekend? XD

I like your thoughts. Nicelynicely. :)

You're cruel. You know that, don't you? I had a good exam today and only have two left (only one of which I have to revise for, and that's not till Friday) and I came home thinking.

Now. Where are all those lists of flavours of Ianto... :D

*pouts* Amn't!

Congrats on the good exam!

(And, umm, sorry but Brit to American translation needed here: Revise = Study?)

Hee. Yes, revise is study. From the Latin re-visum, to see again. So going over all the work for the subject.

And since it is in fact a Latin exam, that counts as revision. I win. :D

Hey, in the contest of Brit-speak vs US-speak, I will never argue that US-speak should prevail. We kind of suck at literacy. So you always win. *grin*

And, yes, I got the derivation, I just wasn't sure about usage. So, thanks!

*giggles* That's fine. I'm quite happy to translate stuff. Usually it's just the way I say things that gets people confused though. ;)

Your unpopular theory may have some merit, though one could argue that RTD put the actors into positions that worked the best for them. There is a certain dramatic sense to it, considering that the Doctor feels a natrual aversion to what Jack has become.

Either way, it was a fantastic scene.

Yeah, I think it worked on a lot of levels. And yes, fantastic.
