I wanted some icons showing my support for Israel, so I made these. They read "עַם יִשְׂרָאֵל חַי" which means "The nation of Israel lives." They are shareable, so feel free to grab one if you like. There is an article on the graffiti used here.

ETA: "The nation of Israel lives" is a literal translation. The phrase can be translated more colloquially as "The Jewish people live." Which kind of says it all, doesn't it?

Well, that's my new default.

Thank you.

You're very welcome. And I've already had someone defriend me.

Yes. I shouldn't be surprised.

Yeah, I suppose, but still. I find myself shocked by some people's reactions sometimes.

I'm glad that it's still shocking to you. I wish you didn't have to be shocked, but that's another issue.

I used to work at a JCC so I got a very different perspective, set of info, etc, than most people I guess. but yes, it would be nice...

I spent a good chunk of my childhood hanging out at the JCC. They had the best pools!

It was also nice for the fact it was closed on the High Holidays and Passover and whatnot so I wouldn't have to arrange to get the days off. And we had an Israeli Shaliach who was great and always gave us all sorts of info on what was going on back home

That does sound nice. Maybe I should consider changing careers ...

Yep! There's the DC JCC and the suburban Maryland ones.

check them out, they'll probably have a bunch of speakers and programs you'll find interesting.

Actually, the DCJCC hosted Bet Mispacha which is the LGBT synagogue in DC. I never manage to get to their events or services, though. I really should.

it's an entirely lgbt synagogue? Or just one with those leanings? Either way- pretty neat!

From: [identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com
Well, straight allies of the LGBT community are welcome, but it's an LGBT synagogue. See?

oh cool! My temple's massively gltb- about a third maybe? The Rabbi's too. But not officially one. It started because the Rabbi was a lesbian and was hired as at this other temple and they wouldn't let her host events with her partner so a bunch of people left in support.

Wow, cool. But ... I thought you lived in the middle of nowhere? How are there that many gay Jews? Am I mistaken? Or is there something in the Manischewitz?

I'm in the twin cities, MN. Decent Jewish population. The original temple (which mine is an offshoot from) is over 150 years old)

Gotcha! I don't know why I thought you were in the Minnesotan wilds.

I think because the only time I've spent in MN was in Mankato.

ah yes. Not tiny tiny place, but by no means big city. Minneapolis/St Paul is actually fairly huge and very diverse. There are a lot of colleges/universities, theaters, concert halls, etc etc etc. A decent number of Jews too- not a ton, but some at least

I've been in smaller places. I think it was the sorority girls with perfect manicures and fake tans chirpily saying that they were going hunting in Canada for the weekend that made it feel like a different planet.

But the Twin Cities has always seemed nice, from everything I've heard.

it is very nice. I came out here from NY (Long Island, just outside the city) for college and stayed.

About this post? What an odd thing to defriend someone over. :/

She didn't say, but the timing is damning. And this is fairly controversial in some circles.

From: [identity profile] babel.livejournal.com
I certainly know it's controversial and why. But... I guess to me, discussion is always preferable to cutting off discussion. What is the point of all these socializing networks if not to explore differing viewpoints?

And I don't want to get into my precise views here, but as much as I sometimes disagree with Israel's actions, the idea that there are people who think the solution--and I know many think this--is that it cease to exist deeply disturbs me. These aren't abstract ideas; these are human beings. Perhaps I am reading too much into a simple defriending.

Sorry, I kind of went on a little more than I'd meant to.

Don't worry about going on. As you say, that's kind of what this whole thing is about.

....had someone defriend me

That's a bit rich!! Obviously they didn't know you like at all.

I prefer the colloquial translation (and did not know it could be translated thus) - while I might from time to time disagree with the actions of the State of Israel (the political entity), I would not like to think there could come a day when the Jewish people might cease to exist.

Date: 2009-01-18 12:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com
Ah, but the point is that the one phrase means both, demonstrating the point that the survival of the State of Israel is equivalent to the survival of the Jewish people in the minds of many Jews.

I'm sure it is. I can't imagine being English without there being an England, even if I never lived there. To the people of a nation which has survived the loss of it's homeland, and retained their identity through such a long period of time, I'm sure it's even more true.
